From Grasshopper to Giant
The Neville Goddard principle that determines how the world sees you
Dear Friend,
What do you do when the problems in your life feel bigger than you?
When money feels like a giant.
When illness feels like a giant.
When conflict, uncertainty, rejection, or delay feel like giants.
Neville’s answer is radical:
The giant is not the real problem.
The real problem is that you have first accepted yourself as small.
In today’s episode of The Neville Goddard Podcast, we explore one of Neville’s most powerful teachings:
“You were first in your own sight a grasshopper, and therefore you were to the giants a grasshopper.”
This episode is about the moment you stop identifying as the small one in the presence of life — and begin to revalue yourself as the center of power.
Not by fighting the outer world.
Not by forcing circumstances to change.
But by changing the conception of yourself from within.
Because what you are conscious of being, the world must eventually reflect.

This is a perfect episode to play while walking, resting, journaling, or falling asleep.
Let it work on you.
Let the idea sink beneath the surface:
You do not need to defeat the giants.
You need to stop being the grasshopper in your own sight.
And when you do, the giants begin to shrink.
Warmly,
James

From Grasshopper to Giant
You look out upon your world tonight and you see giants rising before you. Problems that tower over your life, circumstances that press down with crushing weight, conditions that appear immovable and vast – unemployment, opposition, lack, illness, conflict – all of them giants in the land. And in their presence you feel yourself reduced to a grasshopper, small, helpless, insignificant. This is the common error of man. This is the error that binds him. Yet I tell you, with the unshakable certainty that comes from the one reality: these giants have no existence in themselves. They loom only because you have first accepted yourself as a grasshopper in your own sight.
You were first in your own sight a grasshopper, and therefore you were to the giants a grasshopper. You can be to others, you can be to the world, only that which you are first to yourself. This is the eternal law. This is the changeless principle. Change the first, and the second must conform. Revalue yourself this night, and the giants will shrink to grasshoppers. Feel yourself to be the giant, a center of power, and every former monster in your world will be reduced to its true place, helpless and without dominion.
Consciousness is the only reality. Your awareness of being is the one and only God. What you are conscious of being, that you out-picture. You are forever out-picturing that which you are conscious of being. When you accept yourself as small, when you accept yourself as limited, when you accept yourself as inadequate in your own sight, the world mirrors that acceptance and presents giants. But when you revalue yourself, when you rise in the deep of yourself and feel the consciousness of being the giant, the center of power, the awareness that knows no limitation, then the world must mirror that new consciousness. The giants dissolve. The grasshoppers appear where giants once stood.
Today is the day. This very moment is the eternal now. It is not some distant past recorded in ancient pages. It is now. The conditions round about you have attained the appearance of giants precisely because your conception of yourself has been grasshopper-like. Man’s conception of himself is so grasshopper-like that he automatically makes the conditions round about him appear gigantic. In his blindness he cries out for help from without, but there is no help from without. The help, the power, the transformation is within. It is your awareness of being. It is I AM. It is the faceless, formless awareness that you really are.
Awake, then, to the power that you are, not as man, but as your true self. Awake to yourself as this center of power. You are not the grasshopper. You have never been the grasshopper except in the false conception you have held of yourself. Revalue yourself. Begin this night to feel yourself to be the giant. Feel it with quiet certainty. Feel it as the most natural thing in the world. For it is natural to you. It is your true nature. The awareness of being as God is your true nature, and God is the giant, the center of power, the one who does according to his will in the armies of heaven and among all the inhabitants of the earth, and none can stay his hand.
You do not need to fight the giants. You do not need to struggle against them. You simply cease to be the grasshopper in your own sight, and the giants cease to be giants. They were never real giants. They were only the out-picturing of your own small conception. Change the conception, and the out-picturing changes. This is the truth that sets you free. This is the revelation that transforms your world.
How do you revalue yourself? How do you make this shift from grasshopper to giant? You do it in the only place it can ever be done – in consciousness. You withdraw your attention from the giants without. You turn your attention inward, into the deep of yourself, into that formless awareness that is I AM. And there, in that stillness, you claim yourself to be the giant. You feel yourself to be the center of power. You do not think about it. You do not argue about it. You simply feel it. You assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled – the feeling of being the giant that you desire to be. You let that feeling become natural to you. You let it become so real that the old grasshopper sense fades like a dream upon waking.
In this expanded state of consciousness you are not conscious of being anything but I AM – pure, formless, powerful awareness. And within this formless deep of yourself you give form to the new conception by claiming and feeling yourself to be that which you desire to be. You crystallize this awareness into the image and likeness of the giant. You know and feel I AM that. You are that. And because you are that in consciousness, the world must reflect it.
It is just as easy to possess the consciousness of power as it is to possess the consciousness of limitation. You have not your present grasshopper consciousness because of your world. On the contrary, your world is what it is because of your present consciousness. Simple, is it not? Too simple, perhaps, for the wisdom of man that tries to complicate everything. Yet this is the truth. Your world in its every detail is your consciousness crystallized. Change the consciousness, and the crystallization changes.
You are the good shepherd. Your awareness is the good shepherd. What you are aware of being are the sheep that follow you. So good a shepherd is your awareness that it has never lost one of the sheep that you are aware of being. I AM a voice calling in the wilderness of human confusion for such as I am aware of being, and never shall there come a time when that which I am convinced that I am shall fail to find me. I AM is an open door for all that I am to enter. Your awareness of being is lord and shepherd of your life. Therefore, when you feel yourself to be the giant, the sheep of power, the sheep of dominion, the sheep of fulfillment follow you into expression. They cannot do otherwise.
Tonight, as you sit here, you can make this shift. You need no special time, no special place, no special condition. You need only the willingness to revalue yourself. Close your eyes to the giants for a moment. Forget the evidence of your senses. They are only the out-picturing of the old grasshopper self. Turn within and declare silently but with feeling, “I AM the giant. I AM the center of power. I AM that awareness in which all things are possible.” Feel it. Let the feeling deepen. Let it become so vivid that the grasshopper sense dissolves. Rest in that feeling. Sleep in that feeling. Carry that feeling into your daily life tomorrow and the next day and the next. Live from it. Act from it. Speak from it. And watch as the world conforms.
You may say, “But the giants are still there. I still see them.” Yes, for a little while the old out-picturing may linger, because the old consciousness has momentum. But you are not to look at the giants. You are to look at your new conception of yourself. You are to persist in feeling yourself to be the giant. The signs follow. They do not precede. The evidence of the new consciousness will appear in its own time and in its own way. You do not need to know how. You need only to know that it is so. Consciousness is the way. Your awareness of being is the way. It has ways that you, as man, know not of. Its ways are past finding out. But it never fails.
Man has so long worshiped the images of his own making – the images of limitation, the images of smallness – that at first this revelation may seem strange. Yet the day you accept it as the basis of your life, that day you are free. You slay the belief in a power apart from yourself. You discover that I AM is the light of the world. You discover that your awareness of being is the savior. No man, no condition, no giant outside yourself can save you or hinder you. Salvation is within. The kingdom is within. The giant is within.
Revalue yourself. Feel yourself to be the giant, a center of power. Do this until it becomes natural. Do this until the feeling of being the giant is more real to you than the feeling of being the grasshopper ever was. Then you will see the former giants reduced to their true place. You will see them as helpless grasshoppers. You will move through your world as the giant that you are, and none can stay your hand. All the inhabitants of the earth are as nothing before this awareness. You do according to your will, and the world reflects it.
This is not a theory. This is not a hope. This is the law. This is the principle upon which the universe rests. Consciousness is reality. What you are conscious of being, you express. You are expressing it now. If you are expressing grasshopper, it is because you are conscious of being grasshopper. If you will become conscious of being giant, you will express giant. There is no other way. There never has been. There never will be.
You are not born of sorrow. You are not required to work out your salvation by the sweat of your brow. God is impersonal. God is no respecter of persons. God is your awareness of being. So long as you walk in the belief of smallness, so long will you walk in a world of giants. But the moment you revalue yourself, the moment you claim the consciousness of the giant, that moment your world begins to transform. The giants shrink. The grasshoppers appear where once they loomed. And you walk in freedom.
Feel it now. Right now, in this moment, withdraw from the world of giants. Enter the deep of yourself. Claim yourself to be the giant. Feel the power. Feel the certainty. Feel the dominion. Let that feeling permeate your entire being. Let it settle into your consciousness as the most natural truth. You are the giant. You have always been the giant, but you forgot. Now you remember. Now you revalue. Now you assume the feeling.
Tomorrow, when the old giants try to assert themselves, do not fight them. Simply return to the feeling. Return to the consciousness of being the giant. Persist in it. Live in it. Sleep in it. And the world will have no choice but to conform. For your world is your consciousness out-pictured. Change the inner, and the outer must change. This is the promise. This is the law. This is the truth.
You were first in your own sight a grasshopper, and therefore the world saw you so. Now be first in your own sight the giant, the center of power, the awareness of being that knows no opposition, and the world will see you so. You can be to others only that which you are to yourself. Therefore, be the giant. Be it now. Be it completely. Be it with the quiet dignity of one who knows the truth.
The awareness of being is lord and shepherd of your life. It has never lost one of the sheep you are aware of being. When you are aware of being the giant, the sheep of power follow you. When you are aware of being the giant, the sheep of fulfillment follow you. When you are aware of being the giant, the sheep of freedom follow you. They follow because your awareness is the good shepherd. It calls them forth. It sustains them. It brings them into expression.
This is the great secret. This is the revelation that has been hidden from the beginning. Not hidden in some distant place, but hidden within you. Hidden in your own awareness. You are the giant. You have always been the giant. The grasshopper was only a false conception, a temporary assumption. Drop it now. Drop it completely. Assume the new. Assume the true. Assume the giant.
And as you do, the giants of your world will bow. They will become grasshoppers. They will lose their power. They will reveal themselves as the nothing that they always were. For all things are possible to the awareness that knows itself as the giant. All things are possible to the consciousness that revalues itself. All things are possible to you when you know yourself as you really are.
Tonight, take this truth with you. Tonight, enter into the feeling of being the giant. Tonight, revalue yourself. Tonight, become what you wish to be in consciousness, and tomorrow you will find the world reflecting it. The evidence will come. The signs will follow. The giants will vanish. And you will walk as the giant you have claimed yourself to be.
You are the giant. Feel it. Know it. Be it. And the world will never again present giants to you. It will present only the out-picturing of your own giant consciousness. This is the law. This is the promise. This is the truth that sets you free.
You were first in your own sight a grasshopper, and therefore the giants appeared. Now be first in your own sight the giant, and the grasshoppers will appear where giants once stood. This is the eternal now. This is the moment of transformation. This is the moment of freedom. Claim it. Feel it. Live it. And your world will conform.
The awareness of being as the giant is your true self. It is the everlasting father. It is the one and only power. Awake to it. Revalue yourself in it. Rest in it. And every problem, every giant, every limitation will be reduced to its true place – a harmless grasshopper in the presence of the giant that you are.
This is your birthright. This is your inheritance. This is the truth that has always been yours. Tonight you remember. Tonight you revalue. Tonight you become the giant you have always been. And tomorrow the world will bear witness.
You are the giant. You are the center of power. You are the awareness in which all things are possible. Feel it now. Be it now. And the transformation is complete. The giants are gone. Only the giant remains – you.

Can you now, at this very moment, assume the feeling of your wish fulfilled and drench that feeling to the point where you are saturated with it and believe in the reality of that act? If you can, that act is going to externalize itself. What would the feeling be like if it were true? Contemplate that feeling.
Put it on as you would a suit of clothes and walk as though it is true. Remain faithful to that vision, sleep in it as though it is true and it will become true, for what seems to be is to those to whom it seems to be.
